So far, there has been a lot of information about the upcoming iPhone 14. Some changes may come as a surprise, but there will also be long-awaited new features. The release date of the new iPhone 14 is not yet officially confirmed. Nevertheless, everything indicates that Apple will present it as early as September this year. Here is what the leaks say up to this point.

iPhone 14 Models

Apple will most likely abandon the mini models for the iPhone 14. The scaled-down mini models were available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. This decision is due to the disappointing amount of sales of the mentioned mini models over the past two years. In 2020, Apple has set its sights on the mini format, a compact size with a 5.4-inch screen that was expected to bring profits to the company. Unfortunately, both of these models were not as popular among customers, even despite the lower price, and did not live up to Apple’s expectations. Due to this outcome of events, other decisions were made for this year.

Instead of the iPhone 14 Mini, we can expect the iPhone 14 Max (or Plus) model, with a 6.7-inch screen. This time, Apple is betting on big phones with big screens. Here are all the variants we expect to see at the fall launch:

  • iPhone 14 with the 6.1-inch OLED screen.
  • iPhone 14 Max with the 6.7-inch OLED screen.
  • iPhone 14 Pro with the 6.1-inch OLED ProMotion screen.
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max with the 6.7-inch OLED ProMotion screen.
ProMotion displays denote a 120 Hz screen. LTPO panels are to appear, which allows adaptive refresh rate depending on version and power consumption.

iPhone 14 Specifications

Processor

Apple’s new A16 processor is expected to be available in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max models, on the other hand, are expected to run on Apple’s A15 processor. The A16 processor is to be produced using the 5 nm manufacturing process, just like the A15 and A14. The A16 chip is expected to be larger than its predecessor by 3-5 billion transistors.

RAM

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will use a new type of LPDDR5 memory, which provides 50% more bandwidth than LPDDR4X while also being more energy efficient at launch. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max will most likely receive a RAM capacity of 6 GB. In the case of the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, there is a chance that they will come with 8 GB of RAM.

Camera

As for the camera in the iPhone 14, there is speculation about new higher-resolution sensors that would allow 8K video recording. However, it’s not entirely clear whether the 48 MP cameras will appear in all new models, or only in the Pro and Pro Max versions. If the latter turns out to be true, the camera in the basic version will remain at 12 MP, as it is in the iPhone 13 series. Another change is expected to be the placement of the front camera, which is to be located directly in the display rather than in a notch.

Storage

In terms of the storage, Apple is most likely to stay with the current capacities, that is, from 128 GB to 1 TB in Pro models. That said, it is also worth mentioning here some rumors mentioning that the iPhone 14 will be given an expanded storage capacity of up to 2 TB. Nevertheless, it’s probably best to take that information with a grain of salt.

Lightning Port and USB-C Port

There is also speculation about the Lightning port and the USB-C port. It is not known whether Apple will abandon the Lightning port altogether, but there is some chance that the iPhone 14 will have USB-C. Some speculate that the iPhone 14 will stay with the Lightning port, or even improve it to make its new version as fast as USB 3.0. If the latter information comes true, it would indicate that it will be the iPhone 15 that will have the USB-C port.

iOS 16 and Always On Display

In June 2022, the new iOS 16 was announced at WWDC 2022. This means that the operating system that will be in the iPhone 14 is iOS 16. The new operating system would introduce the Always on Display feature, which has long been rumored. Elements relating to AOD can be found in the files of the new iOS 16, mainly in the lock screen and SpringBoard. New versions of system wallpapers have also been found, which have been darkened, making it resemble the AOD feature. The bad news is that this feature is expected only in the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max versions.

Touch ID and Integrated Laser

The iPhone users have long hoped for the return of Touch ID, but it’s unlikely to be expected in the iPhone 14. The new models may feature an integrated laser that will expand the devices’ functionality and could speed up facial recognition. This new patent would also mean better analysis of air and current pollution levels, which would please residents of larger cities.

iPhone 14 Prices

According to some leaks, the prices of the new iPhones are expected to be $100 more expensive than the iPhone 13. This means that the following prices can be expected:

  • iPhone 14 – $899.
  • iPhone 14 Max – $999.
  • iPhone 14 Pro – $1099.
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max – $1199.

Summary

Based on rumors that can be found, the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models will be much better models than the basic iPhone 14. The Pro versions are expected to have more features, including the aforementioned Always On Display, a much better camera, the new A16 processor and the 120 Hz display. We are certainly looking forward to official information on the new iPhone 14, which we will likely hear very soon.
